My home page was a long running wall of important information each week. If you scroll all the way to the bottom, you would look at my school year backwards from bottom to top.

Government test on Wednesday March 30!
What's Going On
Math: We finished up Module 6 last week. They did a fabulous job. It was very easy to understand groups and division when they are in arrays and groups. The students showed understanding above and beyond the standard when they could give equations with X and division symbols. I was very proud of them.
We will be starting Module 7 this week and will test on it after Spring Break. Module 7 deals with
Problem Solving with Length, Money, and Data. Money and time can be tricky units for some. The more you practice this at home the better! Give them any opportunity that they can get to identify and combine coin values.
Social Studies: We are starting and finishing Government before Spring Break. Here are the state standard for this unit
Government/Civic Understandings
SS2CG1-The student will define the concept of government and the need for rules and laws.
SS2CG2 The student will identify the roles of the following elected officials: a. President (leader of our nation) b. Governor (leader of our state) c. Mayor (leader of a city)
SS2CG3 The student will give examples of how the historical figures under study demonstrate the positive citizenship traits of honesty, dependability, liberty, trustworthiness, honor, civility, good sportsmanship, patience, and compassion.
SS2CG4 The student will demonstrate knowledge of the state and national capitol buildings by identifying them from pictures and capitals of the United States of America (Washington, D.C.) and the state of Georgia (Atlanta) by locating them on appropriate maps.
Book Fair/ Family Night
I really want to encourage EVERYONE to attend the Family night OR at least get your children a public library card. They will be here that night to sign up if you don't already have their own. There is an app called Overdrive....it is a resource to thousands of public library ebooks! It is super easy to use but you must have a library card, create an online account and then get on and create your Overdrive account. It's that easy and then you can hop on and download books and put holds on ones that you can't get immediately. I will send out more information about this too!!
Stop by our GROOVY book fair, open all week!
Book Fair Dates: Monday, March 28th - Friday, April 1st
Shopping Hours:
Monday-Wednesday: 7:30AM - 3:30PM
Thursday: 7:30AM - 6:00PM*
Friday: 7:30AM - 11:00AM
*Our Family Shopping Event is Thursday, March 31st from 3:30 PM - 6:00 PM. We will have lots of GROOVY giveaways and contests! The Jefferson Public Library will be joining us to sign-up families for library cards. Students can utilize their library card to borrow FREE e-books and audio books that can be downloaded on their computer or personal device. This is an incredible resource from our public library that you’ll want to take advantage of at home!

Class News for January 2016 - Kicking off a New Year
MatWriting/Reading
Writing instructions for HW need to stay in their binders. In addition, I want them writing down their current book that they are reading each night. Many have committed to certain Chapter books or series and I want that to be their reading each night. I will give books to those that do not have one.
I have checked and commented on all of their writing homework from last week. Over all I think they did a great job! It is hard to introduce a topic and I think they have gotten stronger in stating them. We will do it again this week.
The Opinion Prompt for the week is:
Children should be able to spend their money any way they want. (For example, if you got $5 birthday money, should you get to buy ANY think you want or should your parents get to say yes or no to your spending.)
Introduce/state your opinion/ support with 3 reasons/ conclusion (your steps are on my website (HW tab, See saw writing folder or in your agenda)
Tournament of Books: The students have begun reviewing books that will eventually be used to determine the top Children’s book in Georgia. The students have actually rated the book and have also created presentations of their favorite choices so far. They amaze me with their technological ability to present their favorite. Please check it out on this site : http://gses-tournament-of-books.weebly.com/
They have reviewed Book 1 and Book 16...check them out. They did an amazing job!
Social Studies:
We have talked at length about maps and the items that are included in them. The students created maps of their bedrooms and the school using a "bird's eye view" method. They also added map keys and cardinal roses to their maps.
Science:
We will begin our unit on Matter this week. We will study Solids, Liquids and Gases. There are many links on my Symbaloo, towards the bottom in the grey tile.
Math:
We will begin Module 5 which continues with addition and subtraction within 1,000 within word problems. Continue to use Dreambox as math homework when they have extra time.
Please check out my Units of Study tab and Module 5. There are GREAT links and documents on this page. There is a great parent guide too.
Technology: The students have worked on so much using our technology that sometimes I forget how much. They are consistently using Google /Google Classroom. I continue to LOVE See saw and get so excited to see you using it too. Below is the summary I received in email from See Saw. It is so great to see the activity from students and parents. There is a new blog feature on SeeSaw. We are still figuring it out and how we can use it in our classroom.
Here's a summary of the activity in your Seesaw class: Kofke's Class 15-16

Week of September 21-25
We will be taking our fist math test on Module 1 Math. They will have a math sheet Monday and a review sheet on Tuesday with the assessment on Wednesday. Please remember to watch the videos if you need any other help at home. I will try and send an additional video to help.
We have really covered a lot of ground on Georgia's rivers and regions. They will be bringing home their books, filled out in class, home to study before the test.
Enrichment clusters start next week. They will find out what groups they will be experiencing sometime soon!
Week of September 14-18
We will be doing the same words for spelling this week. We didn't do the test on Friday. Fridays seem to be slipping away from us too fast these days. I'm sorry.
I hope you can all come join us on the tech night Tuesday. I know some of you said you can't. I am going to get you to experience what your child does with all this technology :-)
I will be giving them electronic homework this week. If it is a task that they can not complete because you are not near internet, please feel free to do it another night. If you can not ever get internet at home just have your child do their reading and math sheet for the week.
We will be taking out test on the Module 1 on Friday.
Week of September 8-11
I hope everyone had a great Labor Day weekend. We went to Alabama and had some last moments of fun in the sun.
A week from Tuesday is our parent Tech Night!! Don't forget to bring questions, concerns and an adventurous spirit :-)
The students took their Sun, Moon and Stars test last Friday. They did a great job!
We will be starting our unit on Georgia's Rivers and Regions this week. This will be a 2-3 week unit. There will be resources and activities attached to this website in the Units of Study tab, Social Studies and then Georgia's regions and rivers. There are already some resources attached.
The weekly spelling tests are an opportunity to practice specific phonics/spelling skills needed for all students. The weekly skill is repeated through many words on the list and then also practices some past skills. The students have the opportunity to challenge themselves with a longer list. If the tests come easy to them, I feel as though they should do the longer list.
We will be taking a speed addition and subtraction test each week. It is purely to build automaticity. They practice during the week within our math program but the weekly test will allow them to see themselves improve and set goals.

New Media Challenge- partner bridge building
Mrs. Weldon is doing some cool new lessons in the Media Center. The kids had an AMAZING time making catapults! They will be writing the step by step directions this week and uploading them to their SeeSaw Portfolio so you can make one at home too! It was so fun!!

Math Module 1
Here are some ideas to go along with our first Math Module to do at home.
|
Apps for Apple Devices
Here is a list of apps that I would greatly appreciate you load on your child's Ipad, ipod or old iphone. Some may be available on other platforms. You will just have to see. If your child does NOT have one of these devices it is NO problem. I have just had several of them bring them daily so I want them to be able to use what we are doing in class.
*Newly added to the list
Google Drive
Nearpod
Explain Everything (this is $2.99, I am not requiring it but we will be using this A LOT)
SeeSaw "The Learning Journal"
RazKids
Weebly
Kidblog
Educreations
Imovie
Handouts (it is a blue app with just a big white H on it)
30 Hands
Write About
Little Birds
pic collage
popplet
Padlet
Some of these apps have pro version. I have the pro version but beside Explain everything, you don't have to buy the pro unless you want.

What a great first two days of school!
I love each of these children already! We are going to have a great year!
Homework: I will typically update all HW on the Hw tab. We are not starting spelling words yet. This week's HW is a bag about them. Anything that can fit in that ziploc is free to come in to share with the class. We will begin sharing on Thursday (or sooner if some come in).
Snacks: I did tell them that they can bring in a healthy snack to have at recess time. It seems like some of them almost need it before lunch. We are all getting used to this not eating until 10:40 when we are getting up so early :-)
BYOT (Bring Your Own Technology: Some students have begun bringing in their technology. That is fine to get in the habit. We may not use theirs each day but they can bring it in in case there is an opportunity. We will primarily be using Ipads because of the apps that Apple puts out. Since I have 12 Ipads it will make it easier to be consistent with the apps and therefore be consistent on lessons/projects. I will work up the list of apps that we use. I will star the most important ones so if they have an old iphone or an iPod they can load those before some other apps that may take up more space.
